As my agency is getting "more seasoned" my families/clients families dynamics are changing. Parents sometimes are no longer occupying their homes because they can no longer take care of themselves for a variety of reasons. Understanding your insurance policy is key if the ownership and or occupancy changes. There are conditions on every insurance policy on named insured and occupant, if any of these change in the course of the policy period coverage may be voided. If a claim were to happen & in the discovery period of a claim there can be a potential denial because of the changes in the household & the insurance agent and or company was not made aware. There are specific policies to cover vacant homes and or rentals.
I sometimes find these situations out through social media or word of mouth but main concern is that your agent should be the first to know.. I don't like "finding" things out on social media but its the way of the world nowadays. Visiting or contacting your insurance agent should be an appointment that you make at least on a yearly basis to discuss any changes. WE are always glad to hear from you regardless of the changes but with our professional advice we can steer you in the right direction for the coverage that is needed to protect your assets.
